There’s a special sort of something that comes with decorating a cake, especially when done together—mother and child, father and child. In that moment, as you wield your piping bag or arm yourself with a spatula and commence the festivities, everything else ceases. Yes, the icing can be thick, goopy and sickeningly sweet, and the end result could be a lopsided mess, but it is your creation, something that you decorated. Isn’t that in itself beautiful?
