Today’s Foodism: America Has Got a Lot to Learn About Cheese

Bill Maher

American cheese gets a bad rap. Unfortunately, that rap is spot on. When we think of all the wonderful cheeses of the world—Gouda, Swiss, Danish Blue, Camembert and so on—it seems almost painful to lump American cheese in the same sentence. Don’t get me wrong; I think America as a whole is wonderful and American cheese on a burger is superb. Outside of that, meh… I say we petition our Congressmen and announce a new cheese for our nation. Who’s with me?

  1. this is interesting – I think it has more to do with big commerce than with America, as America is doing fine with the cheese with the wonderful local cheese produced in New York, Vermont, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, California and may be even all other states…

    • Ironically, I agree Anatoli. But of all the wonderful cheeses that actually do come out of America, “American” has the namesake; personally, I love the delicious Cheddar from Vermont, and other styles of cheese. I know … maybe we get the cheese industry to put hot dogs in American cheese?!? 😉
